Scripture Readings: 1 Kings 19, 2 Peter 3:8-9


1. A broken prophet (1-8)

2. A broken covenant (9-17)

God’s question:

What are you doing here, Elijah? (v9)

Elijah’s complaint:

I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The

Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your

altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword.

I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me

too. v10

God’s response #1:

Wind, earthquake, fire

then...quietness vv11-12

God’s question repeated:

What are you doing here, Elijah? (v13)

Elijah’s complaint repeated:

Anoint Hazael, Jehu and Elisha - men with swords

vv15-17

a) Covenant making and breaking (Exodus 3, 19, 32-34)

b) The Lord was not in the wind, fire or earthquake (v11-12)

c) The still, small voice?

d) Three men with swords (v15-17)

3. Yet God’s plans are not broken - a new hope (18-21)

a) Short term - 7,000 kept and Elisha appointed

b) Long term - Elisha 2.0
